The 10 best waterproof motorcycle boots …

Not all motorcycle boots are waterproof. And, not all waterproof motorcycle boots are the same. Read on to make the best decision for yourself when shopping for footwear that keeps the rain out reliably.

What makes the best waterproof motorcycle boots

The main materials used to make motorcycle boots uppers are at best water-resistant, such as microfibre or well-treated leather. However, the stitching and flex panels will let water through.

To keep your feet dry, a waterproof membrane has to line the inside of the boots and the opening has to be gusseted. There are different methods for this:

  • Most waterproof motorcycle boots keep rainwater out with a waterproof inner boot. It looks like a large sock and it’s placed between the lining and the microfibre/leather upper to make a barrier to keep your feet dry;
  • On some motorcycle boots, the waterproofing is not separate and instead is bonded to the outer shell by direct lamination – that process is more expensive but makes the best waterproof motorcycle boots money can buy.

Waterproof motorcycle boots – all questions answered

Which motorcycle boots are waterproof?

  • Touring boots: A touring boot is typically waterproof – but check that the description states “WP” (waterproof) or mentions Gore Tex, Drystar, H20 or similar;
  • Sport boots/track boots: A sport boot is typically not waterproof – in fact many are perforated for additional airflow. However, some sporty-looking boots look like track-ready footwear but are in fact sports-oriented touring motorcycle boots – check for Gore-Tex or similar in the specification, which then means they are waterproof.
  • Motocross boots: Motocross boots are not normally waterproof – If they are, it will specifically say so;
  • Off-road boots / Adventure motorcycle boots: Off-road and adventure motorcycle riding boots are mostly waterproof – After all, you are meant to ride through rivers!

“All my waterproof motorcycle boots have leaked” – is that always true?

We hear that a lot. If you want reliable performance, look for Gore Tex or branded quality waterproof membranes such as Alpinestars Drystar or Rev’It! H20. Add a little extra money on the price upfront to give your feet the best experience over a longer period of time.

A short lifespan boils down to price. The lower the price of the boots, the cheaper is the waterproof membrane used inside the boot.

A cheaper membrane doesn’t stretch and tears easily, either during manufacture or during wear. If you don’t treat the leather upper to be water repellent, the lifespan of your waterproof motorcycle boots will be even shorter for the reasons mentioned next.

How to waterproof leather motorcycle boots?

Waterproof motorcycle boots with a leather upper need some extra care: you need to treat the upper regularly to make the leather water repellent – if you don’t do that, you shorten the life expectancy of your boots as water builds up in the space between the leather upper and the membrane inner boot.

Which are the best waterproof motorcycle boots for commuting?

It’s a frequent question. The answer is: spend a little extra money on extra quality. If you use your gear daily to commute, you are likely to put 5 years of usage into a single year if compared to the use of a leisure motorcyclist. Every time it rains, the boots are pressure washed as you speed down the main roads. Every time the sun shines, the UV rays age your microfibre or leather upper. If you can afford it, buy Gore-Tex lined boots. If that is a reach too far, don’t buy far cheaper: A lower price now is false economy over the longer term.
