Before you get your knee down make sure you’re Geared up! Can you wear your motorcycle helmet on the track? Not sure if your leather 2-piece is suitable? No need to worry! Here at GetGeared we have been there, we’ve got the t-shirt (and the worn out tyres). Below are our top tips for your motorcycle track day.
MOTORCYCLE TRACK DAY HELMETS
Before you can participate in the motorcycle track day, someone will check you are wearing the right gear. All motorcycle helmets worn must be worn properly fastened up and must comply with the current ACU standards. If your helmet does, it will have a ACU gold sticker on the back.
The ACU Gold sticker is not required for a helmet to be road legal in the UK, but it is seen as a slightly higher safety standard. The ACU Gold sticker has been recognised by many motorcycle racing bodies as a high-level motorcycle helmet safety standard for motorcycling. Many of these organisations will only allow racers to use helmets with ACU Gold stickers.
This is not required we would highly recommend investing in a Pinlock insert for your visor. Most helmets now come with these included in the box, if your visor is not Pinlock-ready you can always treat your visor with anti-fog.
MOTORCYCLE TRACK DAY LEATHER SUITS
Motorcycle tracks do not permit textile clothing, so leathers must be worn on a track day. A full leather 1-piece race suit or a fully zipped together 2-piece leather suit are acceptable. On a 2-piece leather motorcycle suit, the zip must encircle your torso and there should be no skin visible when your arms are fully raised. Most importantly ensure you are wearing the correct sized suit: something that is too big for you will not protect you as well as the correct sized suit.
MOTORCYCLE TRACK DAY GLOVES
Most tracks will not have a requirement for what kind of gloves you should wear on the track. However you want to have adequate protection should you come off your motorbike. Motorcycle gloves come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, but ideally you want to go for something with plenty of abrasion and impact protection but that still has great dexterity.
MOTORCYCLE TRACK DAY BOOTS
Again, most tracks will not have a specific requirement as to which motorcycle boots you need to wear. Three things to consider when buying motorcycle boots for the track are comfort, safety and control.
MOTORCYCLE TRACK DAY ARMOUR
We would highly advise getting a well fitting back protector and chest protector. Most of our leather suits ( 1 and 2 piece) some with pockets for protectors. If desired, you can purchase a strap-on back and chest protector that fits to you, not the suit.
MOTORCYCLE TRACK DAY ACCESSORIES
To ensure your motorcycle track day isn’t cut short consider taking spare knee sliders and toe sliders. Spares are handy to keep on you just in case you wear your ones out. As you can never guarantee the weather, it would be a good idea to pack some waterproofs to go other your leathers.
